Dr. Pyam Azmi

Aane Wala Aayega

Aik rooz ye manzar badlega, aik din ye chaman lehrayega
gulshan me chalegi aysi hawa, ye dour-e-khaza mit jayega
ye dharti sona uglegi, ye chargh gohr barsayega
aik din ye nizam-e-zulm wo sitam, qud zaalim ko rulwayega
qanjar ka kaleja kanpega, talwaar ka sar jhuk jayega
sab thaat pada rehjayega, jab aane wala aayega
Hai azme Khalili sinoan me, sholoan me phool khila denge
Hathoan me nihan hai zoore Ali, Khaiber ka saman dikhla denge
Abbas-e-dilawar ke waris, har ek ki pyas bhuja denge
Ye nasl wa mulk wa rango watan, ki sab diware gira denge
Is waqat fiza-e-alam me, bas ek Alam lehraega
sab thaat pada rehjayega, jab aane wala aayega

In a family where poetry was a way of life, day and night the sounds of marsias of Anis and Dabeer were heard, a gem was born "Dr. Pyam Azmi" (1935). His father Murtuza Hussain (marhoom) was highly interested in the shayari and has written few manqabaats too. Payam Sahib's uncle Syed Ameer Hussain (marhoom) use to write marsias. His taqqalus was "Wafa" and has also printed a book called "Yadgaar-e-Wafa" in 1944

As his mother expired when he was just a kid, the task of bringing him up fell on his father alone. Other parents tell fairy tales as bedtime stories, his father use to enlighten him with the anecdotes of Ahle-Bait, the stories of Khyber, Khandaq the gallantry of Imam Ali (A.S) etc. In this way the lap of his beloved father became a school. His father's bringing up and the household environment helped him to understand the difference between prose and poetry. He started saying shairs at the age of nine.

At the age of 13 or 14 he has written a noha and for the first time, in 1952 he took part in a tarahi mehfil. He wrote a qasida and recited at the mehfil. His father was very happy. soon after in 1953 his father expired and left him lonely and distressed. In 1963 for the first time he took part in Banaras, Lucknow, and Faizabad Maqasadas.

Then within the period of 15 to 20 yrs. he became busy with Zikr-E-Ahlebait in all parts of India. Sarkar Zafarul Millat Moulana Syed Zafarul Hasan Sahib heard his qasidas in Banaras and was very much impressed. He showed love and affection towards him which raised his spirits. Zafar Sahib's happiness, duas and love are his lifetime memories. Payam Sahib was given the title of "Lisan-Ul Qaum" By Zafar Sahib. Zafarul Sahib also publicized the title in a monthly Magazine "Al Jawwad".

He got the chance of visiting outside India too. He visited London, America, Abu Dhabi, Canada, Africa etc. This was his first visit to Sharjah. In the year 1965 He met Allama Zeeshan Hyder Jawwadi. Within few minutes this encounter transformed into a lifelong friendship.

I got the chance to interview him when he was here for Jashan-E-Masoomin A.S.

Rana - I have started taking interviews of Shairane AhlulBayt and I have done a few so far

Payam Azmi Sahib - Shairane AhlulBayt have been taken in huge regard by our Masoomeen (AS).  In the olden days, the sho'ra were not like the ones we find today.

Poets in the times of our Imams were extremly pious. whenever our Imams wanted to do zikr of The Tragedy of Kerbala, they did not invite ... Aalims and Khateebs but these poets to recite their verses on the tragedy of Kerbala and help them to spread the word.

Those poets have given enormous sacrifices. Hazrat Farazdaq in the lines of  Imam Zainul Abideen AS. Hazrat Farazdaq was the employee of of the Ameer of Mecca at that time called Hisham.

Once when the Amir could not find a way to get near The Kaa'ba ....... he sat outside. When Imam AS came ...... he was barefoot and his head was bowed. As he walked nearer to The Kaa'ba people kept moving and made way for Imam AS who proceeded towards the Kaa'ba, did Tawaaf and then returned

Hisham got frustrated and asked Hazrat Farazdaq who he was (even though he knew very well) As a reply he recited a Qasida praising Imam Zainul Abideen (AS)

He said :

You dont know him but The Kaa'ba does

Kaa'ba knows the sound of his footsteps

If he had not gone towards Hajre Aswad

Then Hajre Aswad would come to him

and so the qasida continued ..................

Immdiately after he finished the qasida ....... his house was demolished and he was put into prison. All his property was seized. After a loooong time when Hazrat Farazdaq was released, and as soon as Imam AS came to know of this he sent him a bagful of dinars.

When the messenger reached Hazrat Farazdaq he refused to take the money and said "I have recited many shairs for money but now I have vowed that I will not recite for money anymore." Just give me a "pairahan" (piece o cloth) so that I may use it as a kafan when I die.

When the messenger returned with Hazrat Farazdaqs message, Imam AS removed the cloth from his shoulders, returned the bag of money saying that Inshallah Allah (SWT) would reward him for his shaeri and as for the money , it was merely a gesture of help in the time of need from one brother to another, so then H. Farazdaq accepted the money.

Hazrat Kumayl was another Shair at the time of our 6th Imam (AS). His name was Kumayl-E-Asadi.The riwayat says that Hazrat Kumayl used to say that this is not my shairi, it is my "taqta-e-dar" which I carry along with me.Whenever he saw a group oh people he started reciting verses from his shairi in the maidan of Imam.

The soldiers of Bani Ummayyah used to be after him all the time. Once he came to Imams house when the moon of Moharram was sighted. The Imam went inside and told the women of the house and told them to prepare for a majlis as a shair of my grandfather has come. Then he requested Hazrat Kumayl to recite. Everyone was crying and then the Imam asked him to stop reciting or else the women of the house would faint. Then Imam AS went inside and the majlis ended.

Then Imam AS went inside and spread his handkerchief and asked the people to give the shair whatever they could. The women  put their jewels in the handkerchief.

Once the soldiers of Bani Umayya entered his houseand asked him to recite. Hazarat Kumail kept reciting and they kept hitting him till he died as a shaheed and kept reciting till the end.

Hazrat Debal e Kahzai at the time of 6th Imam AS also recited when he saw a group of people but didnt get arrested because his period was relatively peaceful. Imam AS asked him to recite and keep the zikr of his grandfather alive.

The Imam also told him him that if anyone recites even ONE shair for the love of Imam Hussain AS and if anyone (reciter OR audience) sheds even a single tear then I am the guarantee that the person will go to Jannat

So shairs are great person  (azeem hasti) and Imam AS declares that only a verse is enough to take him to Heaven

What and When was the first time you recited ?

At a very young age' I  recited Nohas ..... thats how I started.

When I was about 10 years old, we used to learn the verses of "Ismaili Meruthi".  I used to change the words and recite them to my friends.   I told my maulvi saab and I got a good thrashing.

Can you recite a few of the first words ?

How many marsias have you recited?

 Which one is your favourite?

Iman- e - AbuTalib. I dedicated The marsiya for the sawab of my parents "Daastaan e wafa ........ from Hazrat ABUTALIB to Hazrat Abbas (AS) - from one uncle to another ....... ie the tale of loyalty

How many of your books have been published?

Walqalam - WalFajr - Islam Hai Kyun? - Ya Ulul Azbaab - Wal Asr --------- About 6-7 books

How many children do you have ?

I have six,  2 daughters ..... eldest son is a molana, finished graduation and then at the time of revolution went to Iran stayed there for 6-7 yrs. Now back in Lucknow .....Two others are in Iran for past 8-9 yrs ..... are married .... one has done BSC ... other is doing his graduation.

Do any of your children recite ?

One in Iran and youngest doesnt .... others keep attempting ...... my eldest competes with me. He says nohas ..... a few anjuman in Lucknow asked me to write nohas every year and now I have given the charge to my son. Once when I was not available someone we knew asked for a noha, since I was abroad my son wrote and faxed it, that noha became a hit and now people asked my son to write nohas for them. ...... he often gives me his shairi for correction

Is there any work being done right now regarding kalaam or books ?

I want to write a book on what I have learnt from the ulema recently ....... it is a collection of hadith which are present in both shia and sunni books.... I have named the book "Qadre Mushtarak"

For example - there is a hadith that says "My AhlelBait are like Noah's Ark those who board it will survive and the rest will perish"...............This Hadith is present in :

Bukhari - Mishkat - Tilmizi - Usool E Kaafi   ........   So I am collecting those hadith which both the sunni and the shia cannot refuse.

What is the use of such collection  ?

While conversing we can give reference of this hadith which none can refuse ... the hard work is to collect them .....

The other work I have started is called "Farangh E Imamia" which will be an encyclopedia, because there are a few words which shias interpret differently and sunnis interpret them differently.

Dictionaries are usually made by sunni scholars and they usually interpret the words according to their scholarly interpretation ...... there is hence a difference of opinion due to the chance in content and meaning

I wish to write an encyclopedia which interprets meanings according to the shia interpretation.

For example - the word IMAM has a number of meanings, my book will have the general translation as well as of the shias. People will find  it easier to relate to the meanings of various hadith and verses.

When you had started shairi, who was your inspiration ?

No one.

How long have you been doing zaakiri for ?

I have always done zakiri. I used to do it at my own place but for the past 20 years I have been going abroad ...... but I consider my self to be shair- e- AhlelBAit(AS)

What would you like to say to other poets

Please think of your shairi as ibaadat. On the day of judgement you can always say I have nothing except these shairs...... do it for sawaab

Please recite a few of your favourite verses

Jo damane shah-e-Duldul sawar hath me hain
Tho samjo rahmate Parwardigaar hath me hai
Hamein ghareeb na samjo, khareed leinge Jinah
Ke asmaan ka Duldul sawaar hath me hai
Mere khadam ko zamaana hila nahi sakta
Ke mera hath kisi zimmedaar hath me hai
Ali ne khai hai Zehra(SA) ke hath ki roti
Jabhi tho qoowate parwardigar hath me hai
Ye sonch kar na dikhaaya Ali (AS) ko zakhm apna
Khuda ka shair hai aur Zulfiqaar hath me hai.
